Selecting power rakes for skid steers
To select a power rake attachment for a skid steer or compact track loader, consider several factors to ensure optimal performance.
The horsepower and hydraulic flow of the host machine should guide power rake selection and must align with the skid steer’s capabilities. Standard Duty and Heavy Duty power rakes work best with machines under 50 horsepower. Extreme Duty and Severe Duty power rakes are designed for use on larger, more powerful equipment.
The width of the machine's tracks or wheels will determine the minimum working width needed to provide full coverage when operating at an angle.
Standard or Heavy Duty power rakes work well for lighter applications like lawn preparation or seed bed creation. For commercial landscape preparation, rock removal or working in tough soil conditions, the Extreme or Severe Duty models provide the necessary durability and performance.
Weight and Working Width
Blue Diamond power rakes range in weight from 528 pounds to 1,366 pounds, making them versatile for mini- and full-size skid steers and larger tractors.
Available power rakes provide a straight working width ranging from 48 inches to 120 inches, an angled working width from 48 inches to 112 inches, and an overall working width from 48 inches to 130 inches.
Smaller power rakes with hydraulic angle capability offer greater maneuverability for working in areas with tighter access. Wider, heavier power rakes with more aggressive teeth configurations are better suited for large, more demanding projects.
Performance Categories
Blue Diamond offers multiple power rake widths for use with a range of machine sizes:
- 48", 60" and 72" standard duty models
- 48", 72", 84” and 96” extreme duty models
- 48", 60" and 72" heavy duty Series 2 models
- 84", 96” and 120" severe duty Series 3 models
The standard duty power rakes are designed primarily for light-duty applications using smaller frame skid steers and walk behind machines. These attachments feature flip-up wheels for compact transport and are ideal for residential landscape contractors and smaller operations looking for an economical, yet durable solution for ground preparation. Each power rake width is available with the option for a fixed mount, manual angle mount or hydraulic angle mount, and comes standard with fixed carbide teeth.
The most popular model in the Blue Diamond power rake offering, the extreme duty power rakes are compatible with large frame machines and available with fixed or replaceable teeth. The low speed, high-torque 6000 series motor delivers 40% more torque than standard motors. A robust 4" x 4" square tube frame provides exceptional structural integrity. This model is ideal for commercial landscaping operations and rental fleets.
The heavy duty Series 2 power rakes are designed for small frame skid steers and mini track loaders and include a bolt-on mount that operators can switch for a different mini or full-size skid steer mount. These versatile units excel in standard landscape applications where maneuverability and versatility are essential. Flip-up wheels and 1.25” spindles with adjustable height add to the attachment’s flexibility, while a pre-lubricated chain simplifies service.
Severe duty Series 3 power rakes excel in continuous commercial use applications and are the strongest power rake Blue Diamond offers. They are known in the industry for their durability and simplified maintenance. These attachments feature a 3/8" thick wall tube frame, 1.5" motor shaft with high-pressure seals and an 8" drum diameter for maximum performance in the toughest conditions. Available with multiple tooth options including weld-on, replaceable or carbide teeth, these rakes have a 6,000 series hydraulic motor that delivers the power for tough jobs.
Built-in Features
Blue Diamond power rakes feature an indirect drive system and chain-driven motor positioned above ground level. This design protects the most expensive component from dirt, debris and impact damage and allows for the use of larger, more powerful motors without increasing drum diameter.
All Blue Diamond power rakes include solid rubber, airless tires to eliminate the possibility of flat tires and ensure greater productivity in the field. They eliminate downtime for changeovers and maintain proper tire inflation, which keeps the power rakes at a correct operating height for consistent results across varying terrain.
Reversible side plates change direction quickly by removing pins and repositioning the plates on the opposite corners of the frame. This feature, combined with 5-position angle adjustment on most models, provides exceptional versatility for windrowing material or working in confined spaces.
Optional bolt-on skid shoes are available on most models for adjusting operating height and increasing material containment by up to 30%. This feature is particularly valuable when working in loose soil or when preparing a site for seeding.
All models feature greaseable bearings at critical pivot points, for long service life even in dusty, abrasive conditions. This attention to maintenance details significantly extends the operational lifespan of the equipment.
